A leading figure of the “Second Newcomers” school, Edip Cansever (1928-1986) has mostly focused on the detachment of the ordinary people from their environment and life and lack of communication. His poems lie on an existentialist path wrapped up in the relations which he sees absurd and tragic. The image in his works were always hidden. His later works, more intellectual-psychological in style, thematize the “absurdity” of life.
“Men have no support other then themselves. Even loneliness gains a meaning when one knows of another’s existence. Then what we call loneliness should be conceived as a faculty of introspection and close observation of oneself which is very close to poetry. Something like questioning oneself about what has happened...”
