TEOMAN SÜDOR
Retrospective
İş Sanat Kibele Art Gallery opens the season with a retrospective exhibition of Teoman Südor, a prominent figure of Turkish contemporary art scene. The exhibition features original prints and oil paintings of the artist. Completing his studies at the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy (today’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) under Bedri Rahmi in 1968, Südor went on to study at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Italy between 1971–1974. While his tenure with Bedri Rahmi changed his views on world affairs, years in Italy helped him understand Renaissance art to the fullest extent. The transformation period in his works came in 1980s in respect of form and iconography; this was not a departure from the past but to lead to a new style nourishing from the past. In his works of the 80s, he created a legend of his own in a space inspired by the traces of Anatolian culture and religions, upon which objects of the nature and images from within life itself were also added. He would render the solid abstract and then reverse the process. He would delve into the secrets of creation and take a travel into the formation of the World. The images come into existence in a balanced combination of motion and immobility. The prevailing values in his oil paintings are color and light, while line becomes the central element of his prints.
In 1978, Südor started a career as a lecturer at the Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts teaching painting, basic art education, visual arts, original print, form and drawing, a post he held until retirement in 2006. Winner of multiple awards, his works are in public and private collections in Turkey and abroad. He still works in his studio and also share a print workshop with famed Italian painter Giancolo Caneva in Undine, Italy. Teoman Südor is also included in the Italian Catalog of Contemporary Art.
