Renowned for their powerful stage presence and emotionally driven style, Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company has been hailed as an extraordinary force to the stage. Founded in 1991 by Israeli born choreographer and artistic director Ronen Koresh, this troupe presents its audiences with an exciting blend of ballet, modern and jazz molded into a style of choreography that is both eloquent and explosive. The company's critically acclaimed work attracts a continually increasing audience across the nation, and Koresh's reputation for passion and outstanding technique regularly results in sold-out performances. The company presents bi-annual home season concerts, and performs on tour at various national festivals, performing arts centers, university performance venues, and charity benefits. The company also is dedicated to educational activities, which include pre-and post-performance discussions, residencies, master classes, and lecture demonstrations at public and private schools, performing arts high schools, universities, and for professional dance companies in Philadelphia and throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. The company has received numerous grants and awards since its inception; Koresh has been a multi-year recipient of the Philadelphia City Paper’s Reader’s Choice Award for Best Dance Company and most recently, Koresh School of Dance won Best in Philly for Philadelphia Magazine. Founder Ronan Koresh was born and raised in Israel. He began his dance education as a youth as he trained and danced with his mother, a folk dancer in the Yemenite tradition and with a local Tel Aviv folk dance group. At seventeen, he moved on to more comprehensive study with Martha Graham’s Bat Sheva Dance Company. Following a three year enlistment in the Israeli army, during which he was able to continue with his dance training, he decided to pursue a career in the field.
Immigrating to the United States in 1983 at age 21, Koresh trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City. In 1984, he came to settle in Philadelphia where he performed with Shimon Braun’s acclaimed Waves Jazz Dance Company. He also was one of the original Evening Magazine Dancers and won a People’s Choice Award in 1987 as Philadelphia’s Most Outstanding Jazz Dancer.
